Scout’s Notebook: Stanford @ Oregon

Scout’s Notebook: Stanford Oregon  10/02/10

If you love offense, then this was your game. Featuring two of the top offenses in the nation, not to mention two of the top quarterbacks in the nation, these two teams combined for 83 points and over 1,100 yards of total offense. Both Andrew Luck and Darron Thomas played as advertised, but it was LaMichael James who stole the show with 257 yards and three touchdowns. The defenses weren’t much of a factor in this offensive explosion, so the main focus fell on the offense of both teams. Here are the highlights and lowlights from some of the players…

Darron Thomas may be one of the more underrated runners at the quarterback position. On the very first play from scrimmage he kept an option and went virtually untouched for a 22-yard

Scout’s Notebook: Penn State @ Iowa

SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK: PENN ST.@IOWA

Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions gave a solid effort versus Iowa’s offense, but their inexperience and inability to contain a formidable defensive line were too much to handle for Penn State in their 24-3 loss.

Iowa’s front four was dominant throughout the contest. Here’s a review of the Hawkeye’s devastating line play, along with the rest of the players who took part in the Big Ten showdown.

Clayborn still the man

Entering the game last Saturday, some were wondering if standout defensive end Adrian Clayborn might have been in the midst of a down season given his lack of stats in weekly box scores (15 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, two quarterback hurries, no sacks and no forced fumbles).

What the box scores don’t tell you is that opposing coaches specifically game plan for the 22-year-old hell raiser by making sure he’s being guarded by multiple players.

Those who regularly watched his

Red River Rivalry

DeMarco Murray Leads the Way

Oklahoma senior tailback DeMarco Murray had a solid day against a very motivated Texas defense, rushing for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries (4.6) and adding four receptions for 31 yards through the air. He still has too many negative/no-gain carries for my liking and is more of a straight-line runner, but this was as good as I’ve seen Murray run the football.

Murray can be very explosive, scoring from 18 and

Randy Moss Heads Back to Minnesota

The Rosstradamus: Week 4 Ramble Behind the Steel Curtain

The Vikings acquired WR Randy Moss and a 2012 seventh-round pick from the Patriots in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.

Mandel’s Take: This trade made too much sense for both teams for it not to happen. Minnesota is a win-now team that lost their primary receiving option before the season started. Without Sidney Rice, Brett Favre and the offense were clearly floundering. Moss now gives the ol’ gunslinger the #1 target he needs, and Moss gets the on-field attention that he so clearly desires. New England, unlike most professional sports teams, understands long-term thinking. They realized they weren’t going to win the Super Bowl this season, not with that defense, and got a third-round pick for Moss. They weren’t going to resign Moss at

Ten thoughts from around the college football landscape, straight from the mind of Lloyd Ribner III.

1) Virginia Tech had lost twice going into this weekend, including being embarrassed by James Madison. The Hokies were facing a 17-0 deficit to an undefeated, conference foe, North Carolina State. Frank Beamer rallied his troops, who for this first time this year came away with a meaningful victory. The offense, led by Tyrod Taylor and Darren Evans, stormed back in the fourth quarter,

Stock Up: Leonard Hankerson

Miami’s senior wide receiver matched a season-high with seven receptions and set career-highs with his 147 receiving yards and three touchdown catches. The 205-pound, almost 6’3” pass catcher can solidify a mid-round grade if he continues to play at a high level this season.

Leonard Hankerson isn’t known as a burner but displayed the ability to stretch the field with his second touchdown reception going for 65 yards over the top of the Clemson defense. With no safety help, the Tigers left Hankerson
