Stock Up: Burton the Burner

Not many players improved their draft stock in week one as much as Utah’s junior cornerback Brandon Burton. On the first drive of the game the cornerback made a quick open-field tackle on a short pass to Pittsburgh’s star wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin. Throughout the night, whenever the Panthers would look for their go-to receiver, they would find Burton running with him stride for stride and the Ute always had inside position. Most of the time, if anyone was going to catch that football it would have been Burton—he was that locked on Baldwin. Burton was effective in press coverage and did his job when giving a cushion. In off coverage, the Texas native displayed a smooth backpedal and flipped his hips with ease to stay with

UCONN@MICHIGAN PLAYER REVIEWS

Michigan’s 30-10 drubbing of UConn will be forever remembered as quarterback Denard Robinson’s coming-out party, but a big reason why “Shoelace” was able to run circles around an ill-equipped Connecticut defense was the tremendous push he received all game long from the interior of his offensive line. Here are a few players who sparkled, as well as some that didn’t exactly put their best foot forward.

“Shoelace” ties up the opposition

Robinson was electric in Michigan’s opening game, as he accelerated past the opposition to the tune of 197 rushing yards, including a 32-yard touchdown scamper at the end of the first quarter.

His speed and agility were undoubtedly breathtaking, but he should thank his big uglies up front for giving him enough room to accelerate upfield against a woefully undersized defensive line.

The Florida native was also able to flash his arm strength in the second half with the bullet he fired

On Location Q&A: Craig Roh, Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI – After Michigan’s 30-10 opening-day win over Connecticut, hybrid outside linebacker/defensive end Craig Roh, who stands at a lean 6’5” and 251 pounds, joked about how his body is not well-proportioned. The UConn offensive line learned about his “huge thighs,” which allow him to have an effective first step when coming off the edge. Denard Robinson stole the spotlight during the Wolverines’ opener on Saturday, but don’t be fooled into thinking that Roh wasn’t just as exciting to watch, even without the ball in his hands. One could be forgiven for losing track of Roh because he lined up all over the field.  From the five technique to outside linebacker to middle linebacker, playing both in a three-point stance and with his hand off the ground, Roh was very rarely in the same spot twice. He recorded a tackle for a loss on

Dantin to Page Gives Toledo Hope

Toledo, Ohio – “Yes it was a big disappointment,” Toledo headman Tim Beckman said after Friday’s 41-2 loss to Arizona. “We’re extremely young at the quarterback and wide receiver position. We have to go back and look at film and correct our mistakes. We stubbed our foot a few times with penalties or a negative play. Their defense caused a lot of that and played very well.”

Although the connection between Austin Dantin and Eric Page was not made as often as Coach Beckman would have liked in week one against the Arizona Wildcats, Toledo Rocket fans should still be excited about their sophomore one-two punch. The duo connected four times against the Pac-10 school for 43 yards with a 24-yard completion the longest play from scrimmage for the Rockets on the day.

Page is coming off a freshman campaign of 82 catches for

Nagurski Defensive POW: Kenny Tate

DALLAS (FWAA) Maryland free safety Kenny Tate has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for games of the weekend of Sept. 4.

Tate, a 6-4, 220-pound junior free safety from Forestville, Md., made the play of the game in the Terrapins’ 17-14 victory on Monday when he stopped Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs on fourth down from the 1-yard line with 34 seconds remaining.

Tate made several big plays during the game while registering a career-high 12 tackles. He forced two Navy fumbles, one inside the 5-yard line when it appeared Navy was able to tie the score in the third quarter.

Tate will be added to the 2010 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be presented to the best defensive player in college football on Dec. 6 by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club
