Northwestern’s Camp Kenosha Recap

KENOSHA, Wis. They appeared Friday morning in black shorts and gray t-shirts and then spent the next hour doing nothing more than walking through plays. That is how the ‘Cats looked at their last practice in Kenosha, where they scrimmage on Saturday before returning home. “Seven straight practices, day off, six straight. I really thought they fought through it hard yesterday,” Pat Fitzgerald would later say, explaining this unusually-placid scene. “We usually do this walk-through on Friday night. But I wanted to get them off their legs a little more to have a better scrimmage tomorrow. So.”

Before his team’s departure for Kenosha, Fitzgerald opined that it had laid the foundation for its season in Evanston and that now, up north, it was time for it to build floors onto that. Did it get that accomplished? “I really think

Richt Praises Effort In Friday Practice

ATHENS, Ga. The Georgia Bulldogs conducted a two-hour practice in shoulder pads and shorts on Friday afternoon in Athens as they close in on the two-week point prior to the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 4.

Head coach Mark Richt praised his team’s effort and intensity on Friday and called it much-improved from the previous day’s session.

“Today’s practice was a whole lot better than yesterday’s,” Richt said.

“Yesterday’s was not very good, especially after watching the film. I thought our effort was very good today, much improved. The weather probably had a little something to do with it. Yesterday was going backwards as far as the effort you need.

“The effort was not there as a team, as a unit,” Richt continued. “Everybody seemed to struggle getting in and out of the huddle, and we weren’t sharp with our personnel

Pac-10 Player Watch: Jeff Tuel

College Football Insiders “Pac-10 players to watch for 2010” series continues on the offensive side of the ball with Washington State’s Jeff Tuel.

Things have not looked up in Pullman, Washington in recent years. The Washington State Cougars’ last Pac-10 win was on November 22, 2008. Outside of that victory at home, against a Washington Husky team that went winless for the season, you’d have to go back to 2007 to find a Pac-10 victory. Worse yet, none of the Cougars’ league games last year were even close. To say this team needs to put a conference game (or two) in the win column is an understatement. When that win (or more) comes no one knows, but it’s safe to say the quarterback will be Jeff Tuel.

Brandon Willis To Transfer From UNC

Brandon Willis, a freshman defensive tackle from Duncan, S.C., has decided to transfer from the University of North Carolina.  Willis enrolled at Carolina in January, 2010 and played in the Spring Game April 10.  He reported to Chapel Hill for training camp on Aug. 5 and had been participating in practice.

Transcript of Head Coach Butch Davis following Thursday morning practice:

“Brandon Willis and his father informed us that he is going to withdraw from school.  It’s a sad situation.  Brandon lost his mother less than a year ago and they’ve gone through some family hardships and some family difficulties.  His father has been looking for employment and was informed yesterday that he was able to find a job.  The unfortunately thing is he found a job in Southern California and he is really adamant about trying to keep his family together. He’s asked both of
