NFL Draft: BCS Busters OLB Prospect Watch

Mr. BCS Buster Kenny Franek breaks down the top senior outside linebackers coming out of the WAC, Mountain West, Conference USA, Sun Belt and MAC heading into the 2011 season:

Adrian Robinson, Temple: This MAC product can do it all. Robinson can play both linebacker and defensive end positions and also help on punt returns and the field goal defensive unit. He may not stuff the stat sheet, but he has a very sound game and plays very disciplined. At 6’2” 250 pounds he can deliver big hits to opponents. His downfall may be his sideline-to-sideline speed. Ranked by most in the top five in the nation at his position, Robinson will have no problem making a path to the NFL. The question is whether he will play on the line in a four-three alignment or at the second level in a three-four scheme.

Boston College Offense Generating Buzz

There was a different look to Boston College football this past spring, one that has brought a louder-than-normal buzz to Chestnut Hill heading into the 2011 football season. The source of that change? A new offensive coordinator in Kevin Rogers (formerly of the Minnesota Vikings), who very quickly seemed to bring life to an offense that one player noted with reservation in a Q&A with the school’s official athletic website “has been a letdown at times to our team.” Proof of Rogers’ influence on the Eagles’ offensive playbook was almost immediate; in the team’s first scrimmage of spring practice, for instance, the team scored six touchdowns on offense, something which players duly noted afterward “hasn’t happened in a long time around here.”

So too did sophomore quarterback Chase Retting appear to mature greatly both mentally and physically under center, finishing the spring with a strong performance

NFL: Around The Web (Rookie Edition)

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio recently commented on expectations for first round pick QB Blaine Gabbert. “In a perfect world, I’d like to see him not have to play this year in terms of having time to develop,” Del Rio said. “That doesn’t mean I would keep him on the bench if I thought he was the best option to win. Ideally he’s able to get that time to develop and really learn the game at this level. I’d love to see Garrard have a nice season, lead us into a playoff position, and then see if we can get hot. Things don’t always happen the way you have them planned though.”

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he is nearly fully recovered from the leg surgery he had after the NFL Draft. Kaepernick was able to participate in the player-organized workouts and threw the

NFL Draft: Big 12 Prospect Watch — Defense

NFL Draft Guru Joe Everett highlights some of the top prospects in the Big 12, be sure to follow him on Twitter @RookieDraft

TONY JEROD-EDDIE – DT – TEXAS A&M: A highly touted Texas recruit, Jerod-Eddie has been a factor for the Aggies since the day he set foot on campus. He can be a very effective pass rusher that has active hands and moves well in pursuit, but he can be neutralized in the running game. He often has difficulty shedding blocks against the run and doesn’t do a good job of redirecting blockers or keeping his feet moving to disengage. This junior is an appealing prospect because of his natural size and versatility. He possesses the ability to fit in either the 3-4 or 4-3 defense but would be ideal as a five technique in an odd front.

GARRICK WILLIAMS – LB – TEXAS A&M: Williams has been

Team Preview: Syracuse Orangemen

Special guest contributor Dan Orlando previews prospects of note for the 2011 Syracuse Orangemen.

Antwon Bailey
Senior Antwon Bailey came into his own in 2010 as a dangerous compliment to 4th round draft pick, Delone Carter.  His quick feet, impressive blocking, and reliable hands make him an ideal 3rd down back.  At 5’7 and just under 200 lbs, Bailey’s effectiveness may suffer a decline.  Without a thicker up-the-middle option in Delone Carter as the main workhorse, Bailey will have to carry a heavier load alongside a 10 pound lighter and two seasons younger Prince Tyson-Gulley.  Even if Bailey remains the 2nd option at RB, his blocking skills and niftiness in the open field could garner serious attention at the next level.

Ryan Nassib
As a game manager, the 6’2 227 pound Nassib was a breath of life into a formerly harmless offense. His

NFL Draft: Pac-12 O-Line Prospect Watch

The third season is important for offensive linemen. Some are expected to make the transition from an underclassman with potential that played well, into an upperclassman that is expected to dominate and set the pace for the whole unit. Those who have truly dedicated themselves in the weight room begin to physically separate themselves from other players. Some build up battle scars, dent up their helmets, get more comfortable on the field and begin to look like NFL ready players or guys that Keith Jackson would call “A Big Ugly” or “One Tough Customer.”

In the end, with a lack of any definitive stat or measurement, one of the most important tests for offensive linemen is the basic eyeball test. Do they look like an NFL lineman? Do they look as big as they are listed? Do they stay healthy? Do they hit people
