The Syracuse Orange made it back to the bowls this season and senior MIKE Derrell Smith was a critical component to their resurgent season. The Big East man led the Orange in tackles (114), forced fumbles (three) and fumble recoveries (three) while tacking on nine tackles for loss as a senior. Not just a star on the field, the All-Big East performer was a regular member on the Syracuse Honor Roll and the Big East’s All-Academic teams. The hard-working linebacker is one semester away from completing his Masters Degree in Advertising. Not every draft prospect takes the same road to the NFL. Some go to the SEC, others come from off the beaten path. Today’s guest known as “The Vanilla Gorilla” Blaine Sumner played his college football at DII Colorado School of Mines. Sumner started his college career as an undersized prospect and now checks in at 6’2” and 330 pounds with the 2010 Raw Squat American Record (805 pounds) under his belt. Sumner was a first team All-RMAC selection, first team NFF All-Colorado selection and third team Don Hansen All-Super Region Three selection. As a senior he registered 32 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three passes defended, two fumble recoveries and led the team with three blocked kicks, adding 6.5 tackles for a loss. Here is a look at five players who are under the radar heading into the NFL Scouting Combine.
Austin Pettis (WR) Boise State: After watching Pettis all week at the Senior Bowl, it is a shock to me that he is not higher on many experts’ draft boards. At 6’2” 205 pounds, Pettis has good size, and his production at Boise State speaks for itself. He’s shown good recognition skills and the ability to find the holes in any zone defense. Add this to his willingness to go over the middle of the field, and you have a guy who has the makings of an effective NFL wide receiver.
