Scout’s Notebook: Alabama @ Tennessee

SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK: ALABAMA@TENNESSEE

The Volunteers came hard and fast after the quarterback in this matchup. But despite making a couple of big plays early on and generally hanging with the superior team for one half, the Orange and White were just trampled in the third and fourth quarters by an Alabama team that outran, outmuscled and outhustled them, as the 41-10 final score clearly  suggests.

Julio Soars Above the Competition

Playing with a broken hand may be tough for most mere mortals, but not Julio Jones who looked every bit the part of Superman in recording 12 receptions for a school- record 221 receiving yards against the lowly Vols.

Jones gave cornerback Art Evans fits all night with his sheer size and athleticism, not to mention the fact that the 6’4” playmaker’s incredible strength prevented him from being outmuscled on a number of balls thrown his way.

On Location Q&A: Nate Williams, Washington

SEATTLE, WA – On location interview with Washington Husky senior safety Nate Williams.

You guys are coming off a rough road game. You played better defense earlier in the year, what do you think happened?

I think it was just that we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. I think it was two or three third-and-longs, and we ended up giving them a pass interference to give them a first down. They ended up getting seven points out of that, and then there was a face mask call and they ended up getting points out of that drive as well. We just have a few little things we need to clean up this week and everything will be alright for us.

Inside The Numbers: New Orleans Saints

“Who dat?” That’s the burning question on my mind. Who dat impersonating the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints? Shaking off the rust of the off-season, getting acquainted to the rhythm of the game again and the meaningless pre-season games where the starters mainly sit. Because of those factors, it wasn’t a total shock when the Vikings and Saints fell short of lighting up the scoreboard with their season-opening game, a 14-9 win for the Saints.

Over the last 47 days since the Saints kicked off the season against the Vikings, Head Coach Sean Payton has had plenty of time to right the wrongs…to fix this tailor-made offense built to smother opponents with an avalanche of points. Payton hasn’t found that magic in the bottle as of yet and after seven games the team is a fry cry from the success it had last season. Who

Scouting the Nation: Wisconsin O-Line Impresses

Not only did the Wisconsin offensive line win the battle in Kinnick Stadium, they won the war, as the Badgers upset the Iowa Hawkeyes 31-30.

We begin at the end. After an apparent three-and-out the Badgers, trailing 30-24, converted a fake punt in the fourth quarter via a 17-yard run by punter Brad Nortman to the 43-yard line. The final four plays of the game-winning drive: An eight-yard run by John Clay, three yards more from Clay, eight yards from third-string tailback Montee Ball, and again eight yards by Ball into the end zone.

On the day Wisconsin ran the ball 38 times for 142 yards. Sure, they only averaged 3.7 yards per carry, which is 1.5 yards below the 5.2 they average on the season. But it’s also better than the 3.0 yards per carry Iowa is allowing. Coming into the contest the Hawkeyes

Scout’s Notebook: Wisconsin @ Iowa

The NFL Draft Bible breaks down the key performers and NFL prospects in Wisconsin’s 31-30 victory over Iowa.

Wisconsin Badgers:

RB John Clay After Clay was stuffed on 3rd and short inside the 5-yard line, a play in which the big back did not really a push the pile, the red-shirt junior powered through not just for the first down but for a touchdown to put Wisconsin back on top 17-13. Later in the third quarter Clay ran through the arm tackle of Karl Klug, who was still engaged with John Moffitt. On the same drive, Clay scored his second touchdown of the game, running between the blocks of Gabe Carimi and Moffitt for a 24-20 Badger lead. Clay ran for 91 yards on 24 carries,
