Rosstradamus Ramble—Week 4

Sanchez Looks (like) Lost

The Jets lost to the Ravens 34-17 on Sunday night, but the loss wasn’t the most alarming aspect of the evening. No, that would be the WAY they lost. Rex Ryan’s bunch gained a total of 150 yards, averaging two yards per rush and three per pass. That’s embarrassing regardless of the defense. They committed four turnovers and nine penalties and looked unlike a team that had been collectively humiliated in their last game. One would have expected the Jets to come out like a well-oiled machine, prepared for what everyone knew would be facing them in Baltimore. Instead, they played like a bunch of guys that had never met each other or spoken with their coaching staff.

We’ve seen the offensive issues before—they can’t run the ball, the wide receivers can’t seem to get into the game—and both of those are,

Todd Graham | Pitt Faithful Show Optimism

First-year coach Todd Graham is known for his high octane offense. Prior to being hired at Pitt, Graham’s offense scored 40 points or more per game in three of the four seasons he was calling the shots at Tulsa. Now the Big East has been put on notice as his style is starting to mesh with the players he has been coaching the last ten months. “It finally felt like that Pitt offense, that high octane offense,” said Ray Graham after the Panthers posted the most points (44) and yards (523) against their highest ranked opponent of the season, #14 South Florida.

“We’re close and this is just one game, but we’re close because all of us have really come together,” Coach Graham noted after

SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK: SAN DIEGO STATE@MICHIGAN

San Diego State’s best efforts weren’t enough to be beat Michigan despite the presence of Ryan Lindley and Ronnie Hillman on offense. The Wolverines quick strike offense proved to be too much to handle and keep up with for the Aztecs in their 28-7 loss to their Big Ten opponent.

Have gun, will travel

Senior quarterback Ryan Lindley is one of the very best at his position thanks to his cannon-like arm and compact delivery, which allows him to effortlessly toss dart-like throws into the heart of the defense.

Unfortunately for the Aztec signal caller, he’s playing out his final year in college with a short deck, as his top two receivers, Vincent Brown and DeMarco Sampson, have both moved on the NFL.

AFC EAST

New England Patriots – Tom Brady during the regular season has an overall record of 113-32 which ranks him number one in winning percentage (.779) by active quarterbacks in the NFL today. Add this bizarre twist to his numbers that every time he throws for multiple touchdowns that equal his interceptions his is only one game above the .500 going 6-5 overall. Brady’s winning percentage climbs to .798 taking those multiple touchdown games away while

Rosstradamus Ramble—Week 3

Wow. What a week three. Upsets, crazy finishes, controversy…who could ask for anything more?

I’ll happily admit I was wrong about the Giants-Eagles game. I thought the Giants would get smoked. They did not. Instead, they battled gamely and secured a well-deserved 29-16 win over their bitter rivals. Eli Manning rebounded from a blah performance against St. Louis to have a nearly flawless effort in Philadelphia: 16-23 for 254 yards with four touchdowns and most importantly, no interceptions. Victor Cruz stepped up in the absence of Mario Manningham to grab a pair of TD passes and Ahmad Bradshaw had 139 total yards and a score in the win, but the story ends up being about Michael Vick’s injury. Chris Canty hit Vick legally, make no mistake about it. Vick broke his non-throwing hand on the play, but do not let that cloud the issue: Vick wasn’t all

One To Watch | Trumaine Johnson, Montana

Way out West—from what I’m told it’s where the deer and the antelope play—the University of Montana has built a powerhouse football program. The Grizzlies had their streak of 17 straight seasons of making a playoff appearance snapped last season. It was a record at the I-AA level, now known as the NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision, and the Griz are ready to begin a new streak in 2011. It is easy to get preoccupied with the big name schools like Alabama and USC but dig a little deeper and there is one tremendous football program out West, and what they have achieved is about as good as it gets in college football at any level.

Last weekend the Grizzlies defeated defending FCS National Champion Eastern Washington 17-14 as Montana played their first Big Sky opponent of the early season. “That ranked

AFC EAST

New England Patriots – The number one offense in the National Football League has one 6th round pick in quarterback Tom Brady and two undrafted players in BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Wes Welker as their offensive leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards.

Miami Dolphins – Rookie running back Daniel Thomas has already out-rushed incumbent Reggie Bush. Although Thomas has one more carry than Bush, the rookie from Kansas State has out-gained the six-year veteran 107 to 56. Bush’s yards

SCOUT’S NOTEBOOK: PITTSBURGH@IOWA

A sloppy and mistake-prone Iowa team was outplayed for much of last Saturday’s game with Pittsburgh, who featured an overpowering defense in the first three quarters of the contest. But the Hawkeyes rode the arm of quarterback James Vandenberg in the final stanza, as they delivered a remarkable comeback in a 31-27 thriller.

From Clueless to Heroic

James Vandenberg couldn’t get much right in the opening moments of the game. Although the center, James Ferentz, could be blamed for not picking up a charging Chad Alecxih on a quarterback sack, ending the first Buckeye possession, the outcome of the second series was all on the triggerman. On 2nd-and-10 from the Pitt 26, Vandenberg was picked off as a result of staring down his receiver, Keenan Davis, which prompted cornerback Jarred
