Draft Buzz: Latest Dez Bryant Rumblings

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports Miami Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells loves the idea of being a mentor to Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant and is close with Bryant’s agent, Eugene Parker. However, Mortensen added he is not sure if Parcells will pull the trigger and select Bryant in the NFL Draft.

Meanwhile, Barry Jackson, of the Miami Herald, reports one scout for a team picking after the Miami Dolphins in the NFL Draft, hoping Oklahoma State WR Dez Bryant falls, indicated criticism has been overstated and that his on-field performance speaks for itself. Oklahoma State has denied a report that Bryant showed up 30 minutes before a game.

Draft Diamond: Jonathan Crompton, Tennessee

Following his senior season, many thought Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton was lock to go to the NFL Combine. After his performance at the Texas vs. the Nation Game, there was no doubt about it. Well, he never got that invite.

“It was a bummer, that is for sure, but God has a plan,” said Crompton. “I think it ultimately it helped me because not a lot of the guys threw at the combine. It helped me to get a number of teams at my pro day.”

As a senior Crompton led Tennessee to the Chick-fil-A Bowl and ended his senior season with 2,800 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while completing 58 percent of his passes.

“This year’s offensive system was my favorite offense because it was an NFL system,” said Crompton.

Tebow Tracker: Interest Flares Up

The Cleveland Browns, who have the seventh overall pick in the April 22-24 draft, reportedly are meeting with Tim Tebow.

This comes two days after the Philadelphia Eagles, who select 24th in the first round, joined the Tebow party, according to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King.

The Bills have shown interest in Tebow for weeks, possibly as a first-rounder with the No. 9 overall selection. Keep an eye on the Seattle Seahawks, who have the No. 6 selection. Seattle’s pretty high on Tebow, according to reports.

Brandon James Joins Cunningham at Pro Day

Florida’s second Pro Day of the spring quietly took place on the practice field Wednesday morning with four draft-eligible former Gators — defensive end Jermaine Cunningham, wide receiver/kick returner Brandon James, cornerback Markihe Anderson and cornerback Wondy Pierre-Louis who worked out in front of about a dozen NFL scouts.

In his first (and maybe last) chance to impress the scouts, Cunningham, who weighed in at 269 was put through an extensive workout Wednesday, starting off with the broad jump and vertical jump in the weight room and ending with a variety of agility drills on the practice field. In between, he ran the 40-yard dash twice. Cunningham, ran his first 40 in 4.92 seconds. He fell at the end of his second run after tweaking a quadriceps muscle. Despite injury (he was still recovering from shoulder surgery he underwent on Jan. 4.), Cunningham pushed through the rest of the

NFL: Theisman Thrashes JaMarcus Russell

According to NFL.com, while appearing on “Moving the Chains on Sirius NFL Radio” with hosts Tim Ryan and Pat Kirwan, NFL Network analyst Joe Theisman said that the Raiders should make a deal for Jason Campbell.

“If I was the Oakland Raiders, I would be on the phone with (Redskins GM) Bruce Allen and see what kind of deal we could make for Jason Campbell,” Theismann said. “Because I can tell you conclusively that JaMarcus Russell will never be able to play quarterback in the National Football League.

“He’s 290 pounds. At 265 he’s too big. He’s inaccurate and he’s too big. And he doesn’t thrown the ball well.

“JaMarcus just doesn’t get it. And to think that you take a strong-armed guy and you put him in Oakland and say that it’s the old Oakland Raiders. Jason Campbell can do everything for you.”
