TAMPA — University of South Florida head coach Skip Holtz announced that senior defensive tackle Leslie Stirrups has been dismissed from the football program for violation of team rules.

Stirrups worked in a reserve role in 2009 and played in nine games.  He tallied nine total tackles and one tackle for loss.

The Hillsborough high school graduate played two junior college seasons at Pearl River Community College (Miss.) and East Mississippi Community College before joining the USF program during the summer of 2009.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue junior-to-be running back Ralph Bolden suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during practice last Wednesday, March 31, and will undergo surgery.<br
The surgery date has not been determined, and Bolden will be sidelined for the remainder of spring practice. The prognosis for his availability this fall is not known.<br
“While obviously we are disappointed, we understand that injuries are part of athletics and not something we can control,” Purdue head coach Danny Hope said. “We feel for Ralph as a teammate and member of the Purdue football family more so than we do as a talented running back, and we will support him throughout his recovery. Ralph is a proven battler, and we know he will come back and be a key part of our offense in the future.”<br

Tennessee returned from its Easter Break on Tuesday to find the heat turned up at Haslam Field.

“It was hot, so we had a little weather change and that gets tough,” head coach Derek Dooley said of temperatures in the mid-80s.

“We had a great tempo the first half of practice and then it starts getting on you. You get tired and start finding reasons to quit, to not be disciplined.

“We tailed off a little down the stretch and we’ve got to work on that.”

Tennessee is practicing three consecutive days during the mid-week in preparation for Saturday’s second big scrimmage of spring practice.

ATHENS, Ga. The Georgia football team held its 12th practice of the spring with a two-hour workout in hot and hazy conditions Tuesday at the Woodruff Practice Fields.

It was the first practice since last weekend’s scrimmage at Sanford Stadium and Georgia’s final workout in full pads until G-Day on Saturday.

“Today was about what I thought it would be,” head coach Mark Richt said. “It was one of our longer practices and by far the hottest practice. I knew it was going to be a grind and it was going to be tough mentally and physically to push through. I thought they did a pretty good job considering all those things. It was not the most crisp of practices, but considering the heat I thought they did a pretty good job.”

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The best news reported by Coach Joker Phillips after Monday’s practice was something that didn’t happen on Saturday.

Phillips said on Monday that defensive end DeQuin Evans incurred a mild knee sprain, but no serious injury, during Saturday’s practice.

“He’ll be ready to go in about three or four days,” Phillips said. “He got lucky.  He got rolled up on, but rolled out of it, so he’ll be fine.  It didn’t swell at all, so we’ll give him a couple of days and see how it goes.”

Evans, who will be a senior in the 2010 season, is the team’s top returning defensive lineman.  He totaled 38 tackles last season while leading the team in tackles for loss (12.5) and quarterback sacks (six).
