Pro Day Results: Syracuse (Arthur Jones)

From SUAthletics.com

Five members of the Syracuse football team moved one step closer to their dreams of making it in the National Football League during Pro Day at the Carrier Dome on Tuesday, April 6. Twenty NFL scouts were on hand to evaluate the skills of nose tackle Arthur Jones, tight end Mike Owen, quarterback Greg Paulus, wide receiver Lavar Lobdell and former Orange safety Paul Chiara. While Jones participated in agility and strength drills, Owen, Chiara and Lobdell were the receiving targets for Paulus.

“It went well,” Jones said. “I’m okay with my performance as far as my defensive line drills. I think I did a pretty good job. It was a little tougher doing drills by yourself, I’m used to having a couple other guys there. Overall, it went pretty well.”

Draft Diamond: Alfonso Smith of Kentucky

University of Kentucky RB Alfonso Smith didn’t have the college production that he wanted to. As a senior he rushed for just 245 yards and two touchdowns, but he got his chance to shine for NFL scouts at the Texas vs. the Nation Game.

Those same scouts then showed up at his Kentucky pro day and Smith wowed them with his workout and physical skills. He measured in at 6’1 ½”, 211 pound and ran the 40-yard dash in the 4.28 – 4.33 second range. He posted a 36” vertical jump and a 9’9” broad jump with 19 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Smith trained at Ignition in Cincinnati, Ohio to get ready for the pro day.

“I didn’t have the season I wanted so I had a lot to prove at the pro day. Right before the pro day started, I was nervous,”

Draft Riser: Nolan Campbell of Maryland

Nolan Carroll broke his leg in Maryland’s second game last fall and missed the remainder of the season.  With just six starts on his college resume, Carroll could have easily been overlooked in the upcoming NFL draft.  But at Maryland’s pro day he posted an impressive 4.39 in the 40-yard dash and a 37 ½ vertical leap.  Suddenly, Carroll was back on NFL draft boards.

“To me, Nolan Carroll is a sure thing,” said Maryland’s long-time Director of Strength and Conditioning Dwight Galt. “He’s a big kid.  He’s strong; he’s a great athlete, an awesome kid, and an awesome person.  He’s a kid that is so easy for me to go out on a limb for, because he’s going to make it.”
