Ohio State Loses Duron Carter To Academics

Wide receiver Duron Carter, son of Ohio State legend Cris Carter, has left OSU and enrolled at a community college in Kansas, coach Jim Tressel confirmed Monday in a statement released by the OSU athletic department.

Carter caught 13 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown in his freshman season, but was ruled academically ineligible for the Rose Bowl. He also sat out all of spring practices because of academic issues.

BuckeyeSports.com first reported Carter’s withdrawal from OSU. According to the report, Carter enrolled at Coffeyville Community College. Division I athletes can transfer to a non-Division I school without losing a year of eligibility. An athlete transferring to another Division I school must sit out a year.

Preseason Hype Follows Jerrod Johnson

Texas Tech quarterback Jerrod Johnson recently conducted an interview in which he addressed his recent shoulder rehab, preseason Heisman hype and more…

Courtesy of FoxSportsSouthwest.com:

On his surgically-repaired shoulder that forced him to miss much of spring practice:

“I’m 100-percent now. I mean, it was just a scope. It wasn’t a major surgery; I didn’t tear anything. It was kind of precautionary to just go in and catch it before it potentially gets worse. I’m back to 100 percent now.”

On his improvements from 2008 to 2009:

“I worked on footwork and quickening my release, and just understanding the offense. I think I probably increased 50 or 60-percent better than I did the year before in terms of understanding exactly what we want to do with our offense, and getting the way we play to where I want the game to go. Jerrell Powe Works To Improve Pass-Rush

From NEMS Daily Journal:

It’s ironic that Ole Miss defensive lineman Jerrell Powe is receiving All-America attention but wasn’t even an every-down player last year. He’s been a dominant run-stopper, tying up blockers and swallowing running backs. His 12 tackles for loss attest to that. But among those stops behind the line are only three sacks, and Powe was usually off the field on obvious passing downs.

“There were stunts and things we did where we did not ask him to be involved much. We felt we had guys who were more effective rushing the passer, and Jerrell would be out of the game,” Nix said. “If he becomes a dominant player in the passing game the way he is against the run, there will be no stopping Jerrell.”

Indications are that Powe is heading that way. He showed more consistency from play to play

Scouting The Defensive Tackles: Class of 2013

Here’s a look at the top sophomore defensive tackle prospects entering the 2010 season.

1. Jerel Worthy, Michigan State – The freshman All-American was a true force for the Spartan defense along the line of scrimmage from his defensive tackle position. Worthy took a red-shirt in 2008, his first season in East Lansing, but it was worth the wait as he put up impressive numbers for the Big Ten school last year. His nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks were both second on Michigan State to linebacker Greg Jones. Right now the strength of his game is his agility. Worthy is explosive and changes directions very well for an interior lineman, which allows him to be a penetrating force in the trenches. He could be that rare impact pass

Vikings Wild About Joe Webb

According to sources, Vikings VP of personnel Rick Spielman came away from minicamp raving about sixth-round QB Joe Webb.

Mancini’s Take: Summer lovin’ for Webb is in full bloom, as Spielman is particularly enamored with size of the young man’s 11-inch hands. Minnesota’s front office has reportedly been blown away by the rookie’s physical tools to the point where there’s already been talk of Webb supplanting Sage Rosenfels as the third string quarterback. While I don’t doubt the youngster’s gifts, I still see a very raw player that has a very long release and some deficiencies in terms of reading defenses. As a runner, he’s extremely strong and he has the ability to shrug off some defenders with the utmost ease, but he’s not a smooth ball carrier. In fact, his cuts are rather deliberate. I don’t mean to come down hard on Webb, but I sense all this hype

Supplemental Draft Report: Harvey Unga

Both BYU’s running back Harvey Unga and Truman State running back Vanness Emokpae have sent in their paperwork to be included in the NFL Supplemental Draft on July 15. Unga is BYU’s career rushing leader with 3,455 yards, he was suspended from the team thought about transferring to another school, but decided to make himself eligible for the supplemental draft. He most likely will get selected with a sixth or seventh round pick from a team looking for a big physical running back. Emokpae is not expected to be taken and will be a free-agent. He will probably get a look-see from somebody.

Unga will most likely have a workout for NFL teams because they will need to see how fast he really is because that is one of the biggest concerns for NFL teams his speed. He is a physical running and is a good receiver out
