2011 NFL Draft Watch #32: Quan Sturdivant

The countdown continues and our number thirty-two prospect in college football is…

Outside Linebacker Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina (Senior):

The Skinny: Part of one of the most talented defenses in all the land, Sturdivant is a smooth, instinctive, and athletic linebacker. The two things that stand out the most about him on the field are his ability to play sideline-to-sideline in the run game and his coverage ability in the pass game. Standing at 6’2” the muscular Sturdivant has fine NFL measurables in terms of his length and muscle mass and although his frame is not on the elite end, he has the ability to add more weight. In terms of scheme, Sturdivant is strictly a 4-3 linebacker, but he is versatile enough to man the weak side,

Scouting The Wide Receivers: Class of 2013

Here’s a look at the top sophomore wide receiver prospects entering the 2010 season:

1. Rueben Randle, LSU – In the 2010 draft the Tigers sent Brandon LaFell to the NFL, Terrence Toliver is our top senior wide out heading into the season, and let’s not forget that LSU produced first round picks Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis, as well as draftees Early Doucet and Demetrius Byrd in recent years. So while no one is calling the Bayou Bengals “Wide Receiver U”, the moniker might not be far off. How talented is the next pass catcher waiting in the wings of Baton Rouge? Put it this way…it wouldn’t surprise scouts if Randle turned out to be the best of the bunch. With LaFell gone the expectation is that the

Scouting The Running Backs: Class of 2013

Here’s a look at the top sophomore running back prospects entering the 2010 season:

1. Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech – The Hokies suffered through a slew of preseason injuries at tailback prior to the 2009 season. Those setbacks left many questions surrounding their running game…but Williams answered each and every one of them. The red-shirt freshman rushed for 1,655 yards and found the end zone 22 times (21 on the ground) for the ACC school. He carried the load for Tech, displaying durability and ball security to complement his big-play ability. The versatile runner can play power football and run the ball between the tackles using his strength, but is just as apt to turn the corner for a big run with his top-notch long speed. Williams

2011 NFL Draft Watch #31: Da’Quan Bowers

The countdown continues and our number thirty-one prospect in college football is…

Defensive End Da’Quan Bowers, Clemson (Junior):

The Skinny: On pure talent and potential an argument can be made that the defensive end is one of the top-five players in college football. The term ‘body beautiful’ was invented to describe players like Bowers. Coming out of high school this Tiger was considered by many to be the highest rated recruit in the country, regardless of position. On the field Bowers is one of the most natural defensive linemen in the country when it comes to playing the run. The ACC product loves getting into the pads of offensive linemen and manhandling them like rag dolls. He is so powerful it is not uncommon

On Location: Ray Rice Day 2010

Two fields, seven NFL players, over 50 coaches and volunteers, hundreds of footballs and 500 aspiring football players from grades three through eight made up Ray Rice Day at New Rochelle High School this past Saturday.

The sun was out and there was a cool breeze in the air as children and pros alike had a blast teaching, learning and just having fun in Westchester County just north of New York City. They were all there because New Rochelle’s finest, Ray Rice, did what all pro athletes should do: he gave back.

“The motivation is to give back to these kids. I was once a young kid in their shoes,” Rice said amid the sounds of whistles blowing and youngsters calling his name, waiting for the chance to get

2011 NFL Draft Watch #30: Rahim Moore

The countdown continues and our number thirty prospect in college football is…

Free Safety Rahim Moore, UCLA (Junior):

The Skinny: This UCLA product is perhaps the most natural and instinctive safety in pass coverage in not just the Pac-10 conference, but all of college football. Standing at 6’1” Moore has excellent length and athleticism, allowing him an uncanny ability to break late on balls while they are still in the air and still find a way to make a play. And more often than not, those plays are interceptions as the Bruin led the nation with his 10 thefts in 2009. Moore is the rare college safety who can not only read the quarterback’s eyes, but is also cool enough not to give away his plan. This makes

NFL: Latest Quarterback Buzz

BIG BEN FILL-IN: The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that veteran wide receiver Hines Ward is getting a bit antsy about knowing who his starting quarterback is going to be during Ben Roethlisberger’s four-to-six-week suspension. Ward believes that it’s imperative that the starter get the proper amount of reps with his pass catchers during the summer. Said Ward: “You do (need to get a rapport), and hopefully by training camp we have a guy that we name. If not, I’m not going to go up to Coach Tomlin and tell him what he needs to be doing.”

Mancini’s Take: Well, the choices are Byron Leftwich, Charlie Batch and Dennis Dixon. Leftwich has the upper-hand in terms of experience, but everything about him is slow from his release to his footwork in the pocket. The man is a sitting duck, and will just end up make life that much easier

Scouting The Quarterbacks: Class of 2013

Here’s a look at the top sophomore quarterback prospects entering the 2010 season:

1. Andrew Luck, Stanford – As a red-shirt sophomore, Luck is part of the class of 2013. However, many believe he could declare for the 2011 NFL Draft should he turn in the breakout season expected of him. His numbers (2,575 yards, 13 touchdown passes) weren’t exactly eye-popping as a freshman, nor was he setting records as other signal callers have in recent seasons. Nevertheless, there is no denying the NFL talent that the Stanford quarterback is blessed with. He looks like a pro quarterback already with his 6’4” and 234-pound frame. Luck has the release of gunslinger…once he’s ready to pull the trigger the ball is on its way to the target

On Location: Ravens Keep Eyes on the Prize

Members of the Baltimore Ravens took some time out to reflect on 2009, while also looking forward to the season ahead during the second annual Ray Rice Day at New Rochelle High School on Saturday, June 12.

New Jersey’s own Joe Flacco had his eyes on the prize by taking aim at the Indianapolis Colts as a team that the Blackbirds have to be “that much better” than to go past the second round of the playoffs during the upcoming campaign.

The 6-6 triggerman also looked to the New York Jets as a prime contender for the AFC crown…a team he’ll be facing in the new Meadowlands complex on Monday night, Sept. 13.

“We’re looking to go up there and beat them up pretty good, but it’s going to a tough matchup. It’s going to be up to us to go up there and play at our highest level; that’ what we expect
