NFL Draft: Pac-12 O-Line Prospect Watch

The third season is important for offensive linemen. Some are expected to make the transition from an underclassman with potential that played well, into an upperclassman that is expected to dominate and set the pace for the whole unit. Those who have truly dedicated themselves in the weight room begin to physically separate themselves from other players. Some build up battle scars, dent up their helmets, get more comfortable on the field and begin to look like NFL ready players or guys that Keith Jackson would call “A Big Ugly” or “One Tough Customer.”

In the end, with a lack of any definitive stat or measurement, one of the most important tests for offensive linemen is the basic eyeball test. Do they look like an NFL lineman? Do they look as big as they are listed? Do they stay healthy? Do they hit people

Ex-Texas A&M Aggies Jamie McCoy went undrafted in 2010 spending last summer with the St. Louis Rams before eventually signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers in January. It’s McCoy’s ability to play either position on offense fullback or tight end which has brought interest from Pittsburgh which like the idea of having him as a pass receiving threat from the tight end position. The race for the 2011 Walter Payton Award, sponsored by Fathead.com, kicked off Monday with The Sports Network’s announcement that six returning finalists from last season headline a stellar 20-player Watch List for the Football Championship Subdivision’s top individual honor.

University of Northern Iowa senior quarterback Tirrell Rennie is among the 20 players on the Walter Payton Watch List. Rennie is coming off the 2010 season in which he rushed for a team-best 1,291 yards and 15 touchdowns. Rennie also passed for 1,543 yards and eight touchdowns. Rennie helped lead the Panthers to a Missouri Valley Football Conference title in 2010 and a spot in the NCAA FCS Playoffs.

The Payton Award will celebrate its 25th anniversary this season and be presented

Q&A: C Bryan Boemer, Southern Illinois

How would you assess the team’s spring ball performance overall? What did you guys do well and what should fans expect entering the season?

“Our assessment overall is that we did very well as a team in general. We are a step ahead of where we were last spring and we ran the ball extremely well. We got six running backs that could probably start the game and then we have a veteran offensive line. I think the fans should expect a run-first offense next year and then overall they should expect just a great team. We’ve bonded very well over this past spring and summer.”

What team goals do you hope to accomplish this year?

“The team goals I hope to accomplish are starting off by winning the conference and then after that hopefully moving
