NFL: Pats Sign Former Jag Holt

The New England Patriots have reportedly agreed to terms with former Jags receiver Torry Holt on a one-year contract.

Mandel’s Take: I guess Holt’s name was next up on the Pats’ “Wheel of Veteran Receivers Who are Past Their Prime”. I don’t get it. Wes Welker isn’t going to be back anytime soon so the need for a receiver clearly exists…but Holt doesn’t give the Pats what they need there, which is a playmaker. Is Holt even better than Julian Edelman? At this point, I’m saying no. Holt didn’t have a touchdown last season, so unless Bill Belichick has a Hot Tub Time Machine that can put the jolt back in Holt, they’re not exactly keeping pace with the Jets (Santonio Holmes) or Dolphins (Brandon Marshall) with this signing. Look for them to add a legit receiving threat in the draft.

Q&A: Mike Neal, Purdue

Do you feel pretty good about your position coming into the draft?

Yeah, I think I feel pretty good and that I’ve proved myself, but I think the entire process takes twists and turns because they dig into every little thing about you, like your character, how well you can learn, can you adapt…there’s just so many different things and you never know where you’re going to go.

So you don’t know which teams may be interested in you approaching draft day?

No, you really have no clue. You can watch the draft every year and people you expect to go somewhere go to another team, so you really don’t know until they call you.

So what’s it like being a student-athlete? Have you finished up your classes?

Q&A: Freddie Barnes, Bowling Green

You definitely had a great season your senior year. You broke some big-time records at Bowling Green and led the nation in catches and touchdowns. What were some of the highlights of your senior season, and what was it like for you to have such a breakout year?

In the first game, I broke our receptions record for a game. It was 14 and that was one of my goals throughout the season and it was ironic that the first game of the year I got to break one of the records that I set as a goal to break.

Yeah, the first game. And then you had an awesome bowl game. You had what, three TDs in that game and how many catches?

17.

Seventeen catches in that

Draft: The Lunch Bucket Squad

Some players take a while to develop, physically…like Ohio University defensive back Thad Turner for example. They nicknamed him “The Worm” because he was about 140 pounds when he arrived on campus. Since then, he’s added almost 50 pounds and now fits the mold of a NFL defensive back. It’s the guys who have already developed, who already weigh 180 coming out of high school, that garner more attention from college recruiters. It is they who have a leg up for scholarships to bigger schools and are one step closer to the NFL.

Being able to talk with players from all walks of football life, from the Florida Gators to Tufts University, you get a real feel for who has the attitude to take it to the next level. However, even with the right attitude, when you aren’t from a big school or a big conference, the

Eric Decker Makes Late Push To Rise Up Boards

Decker returned to the Twin Cities last week after a whirlwind tour of team visits. His itinerary included stops at the Patriots, Panthers, Chiefs, Broncos and Cardinals.

He also squeezed in a trip to Indianapolis so that doctors could re-examine his foot and deliver the results to all 32 teams. Decker initially feared his injury would cause him to drop to lower rounds, but his foot is on the mend and a number of draft experts still project him as a second-round pick.

“It was tough because at first I kind of watched myself fall a little bit,” he said, referring to all the draft rumors and speculation. “But slowly I’m climbing back up. I wish I could have worked out but obviously I can’t control that. I did everything I could do. Whatever happens, I’ll go to a great organization that’s a good fit for me.”
