Temple Announces Cherry & White Rules & Roster

PHILADELPHIA (4/15/10) – Temple University football has announced its roster for the annual Cherry & White intra-squad scrimmage on Saturday, April 17, at 2 p.m. at the Edberg-Olson Complex (11th & Diamond Streets).

This year, because of injuries, the scrimmage will feature offense (white), under the direction of Matt Rhule, versus defense (cherry), under the guidance of Mark D’Onofrio, instead of two full squads. Scoring will be kept.

Additionally, several Owls have switched positions during spring drills.  R-senior QB Vaughn Charlton now plays tight end and wears No. 3.

R-sophomore Vaughn Carraway and R-junior Anthony Parker-Boyd have moved from wide receiver to defensive back. Sophomore Matt Falcone and r-freshman Geoffrey Prather are now linebackers.

Under the guidance of fifth-year head coach Al Golden, this season’s squad returns 56 lettermen, including 16 starters.

Vol Seniors Draft Orange & White Teams

Tennessee’s seniors turned the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center into their own version of a “War Room” on Wednesday night, selecting the teams for Saturday’s Dish Network Orange and White Game.

“The seniors were very well-prepared for their first draft,” head coach Derek Dooley said of the one-hour session. “They had detailed scouting reports on every member of the team and created some calculated mismatches in their picks.

“Like the NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see if some of the higher picks perform to their value.”

Selection order wasn’t revealed, but both sides were pleased with the outcome in anticipation of Saturday’s 2 p.m. kickoff from Neyland Stadium.

Wide receiver Gerald Jones joins tight end Luke Stocker, tailback David Oku and linebacker LaMarcus Thompson on the Orange roster, which will be quarterbacked by Matt Simms. The White team features wide receiver

UK Passing Game Continues to Progress

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Coach Joker Phillips continues to be pleased with the progress of the passing game during spring practice.

“That’s our emphasis in the spring, make sure we come out of this feeling good about our passing game,” Phillips said.  “Saturday (during the scrimmage) we took a huge step in making some plays and throwing to the right people.  Every time we come out here, that’s the emphasis, throwing the football.  The thing we have to do is get our (passing) game up to speed offensively so we can be balanced.

“The receivers have to make plays.  The quarterbacks have to trust that those guys to make plays.  I see a trusting relationship with both of them, the quarterbacks give them a chance and the receivers make plays for them, so the quarterbacks give them more chances.”

Dooley Likes Look Of Young Vols Up Front

Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley said after Tuesday’s practice that he was pleased with what he saw Saturday from mid-term freshmen defensive ends Corey Miller and Jacques Smith.

“Let me tell you, those two guys are going to be really good football players. They have a great attitude and great character; they play with tremendous effort and have a lot of physical skills. They are progressing at a really rapid pace and are going to be important to us this year.

“I’m glad they are part of our program.”

On the offensive side, Dooley had words of support for three of the members of his young offensive line:

Dallas Thomas “The most consistent performer has been Dallas Thomas. He’s been a real steady hand at left tackle.

Aggie Running Backs Put To The Test

LOGAN, Utah When injuries occur, good teams find a way to overcome that injury. With junior running back Robert Turbin out for the spring and possibly into the 2010 season, the Utah State football coaches and running backs are looking at all of the positives that can come out of it. The injury could be a good test to see how good and how deep this Aggie football team really is.

USU offensive coordinator Dave Baldwin is taking the optimistic approach to Turbin’s injury.

“The way I look at it is if you’re a single-back offense there is only one back in the back-field anyway. The running backs are looking at it as a chance, and they are excited. They know they will get their reps. The three of those guys will compete to see who comes out on top,” Baldwin said.
