In the “Duel Cincy’s Combo: Zach Collaros to D.J. WoodsWhen standout quarterback Tony Pike went down with an injury to his arm in the middle of the 2009 football season, it was red-shirt sophomore quarterback Zach Collaros who was asked to step in and take over the helm under center for the Bearcat offense. Brian Kelly, who was the head coach at the time, didn’t expect much from his backup quarterback from Steubenville High School in Ohio, and for good reason. After all, Collaros had red-shirted as a freshman in 2007 and attempted just four passes in the whole of 2008, serving as one of five total passers for Cincinnati that year. Collaros surprised, however, showing tremendous comfort and composure as a game manager in a 34-17 win for his team after Pike went down against the University of South Florida. Expect that to change dramatically in 2011, however, as Green has departed for greener pastures in the NFL (drafted by Bengals as No. 4 pick of the first round in this year’s draft) and King has been slated as the heir-apparent in a wide receiver corps that should only become more dangerous as quarterback Aaron Murray continues to come into his own. What did you guys do well and what should fans expect entering the season? Spring ball was good, especially for the younger kids who are still fitting into the system. We were able to create depth at many positions and that will help us out in the fall. What team goals do you hope to accomplish this year? Go to the C-USA Championship game again and win it…and of course, another bowl game would be great. Every year we need to make our goals higher and work to accomplish them. Have you set any personal goals that you would like to achieve? Block a lot of field goals! |
