CFI Q&A: DE Margus Hunt, SMU

College Football Insiders Player Interview with SMU’s Margus Hunt:

How would you assess the team’s spring ball performance overall? What did you guys do well and what should fans expect entering the season?

Spring ball was good, especially for the younger kids who are still fitting into the system. We were able to create depth at many positions and that will help us out in the fall.

What team goals do you hope to accomplish this year?

Go to the C-USA Championship game again and win it…and of course, another bowl game would be great. Every year we need to make our goals higher and work to accomplish them.

Have you set any personal goals that you would like to achieve?

Block a lot of field goals!

NCAA: Mr. Versatility, Mohamed Sanu

Over the past few years the Rutgers Scarlet Knights have proved to be a mere shadow of the BCS sweethearts they were back in 2006, yet head coach Greg Schiano has somehow continued to find ways to convince some of the best talent in the Northeast to come and play football in the state of New Jersey. Perhaps no other player since the departure of tailback Ray Rice to the Baltimore Ravens back in 2008 has emerged as prolific an example of this trend as Mohamed Sanu, a 6’2”, 218-pound receiver who spent his childhood shuttling between New Jersey and his parents’ home country of Sierra Leone.

1. Tank Carder, Texas Christian While most people rank this TCU product as an outside linebacker, he is blessed with the skill set to be a top-notch middle linebacker. Carder is a playmaker in the Horned Frogs defense, with the ability to cover ground from sideline-to-sideline. Last season he had 60 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and one interception on his way to securing Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors. He also

Can Russell Wilson Prosper in the Big Ten?

Can Russell Wilson Prosper in the Big Ten?

According to a report by NBCSports.com’s Keith Arnold, QB Russell Wilson is signed, sealed and delivered as the newest member of the Wisconsin Badgers football team. The questions here are: How will the multi-talented triggerman fare under a new system in the Big Ten and what kind of future does he have in the NFL if he decides to choose football over baseball?

Mancini’s Take: If Wilson does indeed suit up for Bret Bielema’s squad this fall, he’ll first have to beat out the inexperienced Jon Budamyr for the starting position. Based on his track record alone, the Richmond, Virginia native should be a shoe-in to be the Badgers leading man this fall. Wilson’s biggest challenge will be adapting to a pro style system after three seasons of playing in Tom O’Brien’s shotgun spread attack. While

Chris Neild Making a Sudden Impact in D.C.

Redskins veterans say seventh-round pick Chris Neild “picked things up quickly” at last week’s player-organized minicamp.

Mancini’s Take: It’s no surprise that “Truck” Neild is proving to be a quick study. The seventh-round pick is all about hard work and did nothing but constantly get in better shape and improve during his five years at West Virginia. There’s a big need at nose tackle in D.C., considering that the Redskins were forced to go with the sluggish and lazy Albert Haynesworth in the middle of their three-man front line. This is the same guy who was literally lying down on the turf with bodies flying around him during a horrific Monday Night Football loss to Philadelphia. Acquiring Haynesworth was one of the worst free agent moves of all time and it’s time to cut the cancer from a team that doesn’t quite measure

Matt O’Donnell Receives Tryout With Celtics

Rather than sign immediately with Saskatchewan of the CFL, which selected him at last month’s Canadian league draft, former Queens OT Matt O’Donnell has reportedly is in Boston for a tryout with the NBA’s Celtics. The 6-10 O’Donnell, one of the two Canadians at this year’s East-West All-star game, only played intramural basketball at Queens and hasn’t played the sport competitively since high school. O’Donnell, though, has reportedly received some free-agent interest from several NFL teams since the 2011 draft in April, and may in fact be just putting in time until the NFL labor situation is resolved and he sees what his status is south of the border. CFL teams will be heading to camp this weekend.

Inside The Numbers: Drafting A Super Bowl

The grind of playing 16 regular season games and in some cases, like the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, 20 games overall during one calendar season creates tremendous wear and tear on the bodies of pro football players. By season’s end, after the grind, it’s depth that puts a team over the top.

After another season of covering games it’s spring cleaning time…time to decide what to toss from the endless amount of programs, paper, and team guides. When I came across the flip card for Super Bowl XLV between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers (which shows the starters along with the entire roster), I decided to take another look at who started the game. One thing led to another and before I knew it, I was jotting down the draft round each starter was selected and we were going Inside the
